Love Yourself

Today is February 14th – Valentine’s Day!! The day when we expect our significant other to know exactly what to get us to make sure we feel loved. The men in our lives should get us our favorite chocolate, favorite flowers and make reservations at our favorite restaurant. They should present us with the most beautiful card with the perfect words written inside. That’s the way they need to show their love to us, right!?!

Honestly, sometimes we women build up Valentine’s Day so much that we can only be disappointed. Let’s face it, most of us are not getting that horseback ride along the beach to a secluded dinner under the stars. Yeah! I have watched way too many movies!

We can’t depend on someone else to give us all the love we want and need. Love doesn’t have to come from someone else, it needs to come from you first. Doing purposeful actions to show yourself love attracts more loving and positive energy. It’s the small actions that lead to a lifetime of self-love. When we learn to be kind to our bodies, our minds and our spirit, we attract others who want the same for us. We have more compassion and respect for ourselves when we intentionally treat ourselves with love.

So, whether you are married, single, engaged, complicated – whatever the situation, show yourself some love today. Here are a few ideas to get you started…

  1. Read the Bible. I know, I know, you’re thinking, that’s her answer for everything. But the Bible is God’s love letter to the church. When we realize how much He loves us, we can see our value.
  2. Pray. Trust me, connect to the one that loves you more than anyone else ever could. See yourself through God’s eyes.
  3. Buy yourself flowers! Put them in a pretty vase and every time you see or smell them, remind yourself how special you are.
  4. Get that massage. This one is tough for me, but sometimes we need to just take the time to focus on ourselves.
  5. Volunteer. There are so many charities that could use an extra hand. When we are willing to help someone else it helps us realize how blessed we truly are. So many times I have done something to help someone else and leave feeling better about myself.
  6. Get a manicure/pedicure. There’s something about having pretty hands and feet that make a girl feel better. If you can’t afford to have them done in a salon then give yourself one at home. They don’t have to be perfect, it’s more about taking time for yourself.
  7. Treat yourself to chocolate. Even one bite can help your mood. Just don’t eat the whole box at once.
  8. Go see a movie. Get a ticket and some popcorn, grab your favorite seat and show yourself a good time, with or without a companion.
  9. Watch a favorite childhood movie. There is something nostalgic about watching a movie you loved as a kid. It helps you connect with the child inside that deserves love.
  10. Just Breathe. Sometimes we need to take a few moments to just inhale deeply and exhale. Life is chaotic, so take a moment to relax breathe in deep and breathe out.
  11. Write yourself a letter. Write down all the things you love about yourself. Go ahead, remind yourself of how great you are.
  12. Take a bath. A scented bubble bath, some relaxing music and a cup of tea will help you reconnect and relax.
  13. Get an essential oil diffuser. I have one beside my bed. The smell of lavender and frankincense helps me get a good night’s sleep. You can get the benefits of oil aromatherapy in your home, office and even your car.
  14. Connect with nature. Where I live we have several great bike paths for this. I enjoy taking a run/walk or bike ride. There’s nothing quite like feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair to revive your spirit.
  15. Play with an animal. We have 4 dogs and 3 cats at our house. They love unconditionally and can make a bad day better. Take your dog for a walk or to the dog park. Let their energy and love spill over onto you.
